Was I Ready? No. Will I Try Again? Yes!

“Every time I try to DO something, things go wrong!” This is a common complaint I make when once again, my attempts to accomplish a goal go horribly wrong. I have been saying this for years because, yes, my plans get thwarted! Sometimes I chalk it up to my chronic case of having bad luck or because of a huge misunderstanding that ruins EVERYTHING (like a friendship I had for years that a “friend” ended over one such misunderstanding). Or I just chalk it up to life knocking me down all the damn time.   Well, I may get knocked down, but I’m still going to get back up!   But now I am saying that very thing again, because, once again, my plans were shot down!   As part of creating this “new life” for myself after getting sober, I wanted to start being more physically active. In the past, I spent HOURS sitting down to write and read. And I’m doing it again! This damaged my health and made me neglect taking care of myself. I soon realized that I was going back to th...

A reminder to start small

Several months ago, I decided that one of my fitness goals would be to run in a race and NOT come in last. Because that’s exactly what happened when I ran in a race while participating in cross country at a high school I attended (Monta Vista High School – just one of the high schools I attended!). Even though my coach was with me at the time and everybody was still excited and happy that I had completed the 5K run, I still felt bad that I came in last. That really sucked! And as part of my “new life” in sobriety, I not only wanted to make physical fitness a part of my daily life, but I also wanted to set some goals. I’m a goal-setter! It's not enough just to do something; I have to set a goal for it!   So, yeah, running in a race became that goal.   So I asked my doctor (my PCP) if I could start running again. She said yes, and to start small. She told me I had to go slow at first and I took this to mean short sprints while I was out on my walks.   But when I...

A Very Merry Christmas

Image
My Christmas Eve wasn’t so great yesterday. I mean, yes, some good things happened: I finally got back an interview for the monthly newsletter (thanks, Natasha!), I got to watch Die Hard , the peanut butter blossom cookies I made for the very first time turned out really good and so yummy, and hubby made a nice Christmas Eve dinner, but some bad things happened too. I was missing my parents, I was sick with a queasy stomach for most of the day, I had a headache that lasted for hours that NOTHING helped (not even my prescription headache medicine!) and hubby bit my head off over the kitchen being messy. All of that put me into a DEEP depression and I just locked myself in my room for a while to try to calm down. (I tried to read on my phone but it wasn’t working!)   Still, I know the day could have been worse. The holidays are hard for a lot of people. My oldest recently had to talk someone out of trying to commit suicide and a new friend is having her first Christmas w...

12 Things to Celebrate From My Day

Image
Photo credit: The blowup/unsplash I haven't done a celebration post for some time. Since good things have happened today, I feel I should mark the occasion by writing a celebration post!   And I have reason to celebrate today! Even now, as I write this, I am smiling. I am just really happy.   But I am also feeling very grateful too. Just so immensely grateful for the good things that happened today. They were REALLY good things!   So here are the things I have to celebrate from my day:   1. I wrote an article which I THINK might be a good fit for a magazine I have dreamed about being published in and I HOPE it will be accepted by.   I got the idea this morning right after I woke up. I just had a title. I put that title down onto a blank Word doc, thinking it could be a blog post. Then I did my morning workout (Calisthenics). As I worked out, I thought, you know what? That "blog post" could be an article. And I soon had a bunch of ide...
