Reading for Pleasure

As someone who reviews books, I often find I am reading nothing except books that I am writing a review for. However, I try to squeeze in other books that have other purposes, such as books for research, books I hope to learn something new from, as well as books to read for pleasure.

But it seemed that lately, I wasn’t making time to read any books for pleasure. Just the other stuff.

I do enjoy reviewing books, as well as reading books for research and educational purposes. But sometimes, I just like to read books simply for the act of enjoying the book. These are the kinds of books I don’t want to have to analyze, take notes from, or put to use from studying.

So when I noticed that I was falling behind on reading for pleasure, I decided to do something about it!

My solution? Get up earlier in the morning so that I have that precious time to read just for the enjoyment.

While most people may see getting up earlier just to have time to read as a silly change to make, I feel it is important for us to set aside time every day that is just for ourselves to do something that we enjoy doing. This is a form of self-care and not something which we should neglect!

I already wake up early in the morning, anyway. I do this because that is my own personal time for exercise, writing and spending time cuddling with our foster kitten. Why not throw some time reading for pleasure into that mix as well?

The reading I prefer to do in the mornings usually consists of reading an essay, a short story, a poem, an article about writing, and an article about mythology (it’s my current fixation!). So I include books – whether print or ebook, or both! – into this mix as well. Specifically, books to read just to enjoy.

Like I said, though, I fell behind on that for a while there. But I’m glad I was able to bring that back into my early morning routine as of this morning. I hope I can keep it up!
