You Don't Mess with Mama Bear

I have an Instagram account, and while I was on there recently, I saw a post that read, “I will not be quiet just so you can be comfortable.” This inspired me to write a poem with that very same title for a collection of anti-Trump poems I am writing, because lately, I have been posting things online that speaks out against things that have happened because of our current president.

And lately, I have amped up this activity, only because one thing about that president is that he is at war with the LGBTQA+ community. One of the things he said during his campaign for the second term? “No transgender.” And, ya know, one of my kids is transgender. The other one is gay. So he essentially decided to pick a fight with a community that my kids and I belong to. I am also disabled, and since he has eliminated DEI, this affects the disabled community, as well.

This means war!

Anyone who has taken it upon themselves to hurt the people I love are in for a reckoning from me. I will not idly stand by, cover my eyes, or ignore the shitshow taking place in our country just because there are people who don’t like “talking about politics” or choose to remain ignorant over the things that are happening. (Believe me, I know there are fake sources of news, I know there are fake posts and pictures being spread around, and I know that there are people pushing conspiracy theories. Unlike the people who voted for that guy, I can think for myself, research what people are saying, and investigate sources to see if something is true.)

So, yes, I have been actively speaking out against this hatred that man in the White House is spewing. And if people block me for it, distance themselves, or mute me, I don’t care. I will keep doing what I am doing. My kids can defend themselves, sure, but I will also fight for them and their rights. I will continue to maintain their right to the health care that they are now being denied, the inclusion that they are losing a foothold in, and their existence that the government is trying to erase.

You can take away our books but you can’t take away our existence.

In the past, I used to worry about being blocked on social media for speaking out against Trump’s hatred for others. But not anymore. My recent actions have resulted in me being unfriended and blocked, but I will never be silenced. For as long as this war the government has launched against the LGBTQA+ and disabled communities prevails, I will keep saying something, doing something, and writing something.

I will also be paying attention to those who cut me off because of it, and those who choose to remain silent.
